Trauma and complex trauma therapy

Marissa has worked with many clients who have experienced a range of impacts from traumatic life events and may be experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The impacts of exposure to traumatic experiences can be vast and vary for different individuals.

It may include things such as:

·  Hypervigilance

·  Avoidance

·  Sleep disturbances

·  Mood changes

·  Shame

·  Emotional numbing

The impact of trauma can be cumulative. For those who have experienced multiple traumatic experiences, including childhood or developmental trauma, they may develop complex PTSD. Complex PTSD can have wide reaching impacts upon individuals’ relationships, self-identity, trust, emotional regulation and self-worth.

Marissa recognises for many people, healing from trauma isn't about forgetting what happened. It's about reducing the distress associated with traumatic memories, rebuilding a sense of safety and reconnecting with the life that matters to you.

Marissa can support clients to heal from their trauma at a pace that feels right for them and understand the difficulties that may come about when working on healing from trauma. Marissa’s approach is to integrate appropriate evidence-based treatment modalities clients to build skills to manage the day-to-day impacts of trauma before processing traumatic experiences. Many people first benefit from developing skills for emotional regulation, grounding and coping before exploring traumatic memories in greater depth.
